  • Any bags used within the retail sector, including...
  • Shopping bags, carrier bags, display bags, produce bags, packing bags and mailing bags
  • Available in a range of styles, shapes, sizes and thicknesses to suit the job in hand
  • Used to support every aspect of a retail business, from displaying products (display bags) to packing food or other items (packing bags) and allowing customers to collect produce (produce bags) to helping them carry their shopping home (carrier bags)
  • Usually made from polythene, although some retail bags are made from other materials
  • Often available in a biodegradable alternative to polythene (e.g. biodegradable carrier bags), thus helping to show your customers that you care about the environment
  • Also made from paper (e.g. brown or white paper bags, take away carriers, high end flexiloop shopping bags)

The term ‘retail bags’ is used to describe a wide variety of bags used within the retail sector to cover a range of tasks from storing to carrying products and making life easier for both the retailer and the consumer alike.

Retail bags actually included a number of other ranges of bags that have their own specific name - including but not limited to carrier bags, produce bags, packing bags, mailing bags and others - and are a standalone type of bag in their own right. They are grouped together under the broad term ‘retail bags’ as they are all used within the retail environment.

Cyanoacrylate esters (CA) and their corresponding polymers (PolyCA) are used as normal and medical adhesives, biodegradable carriers for controlled drug delivery, and as agents for fingerprint development in forensic science. Most reports of cyanoacrylate are on ethyl or 2-octyl cyanoacrylate ester with small attention to other esters. It is the objective of this study to determine the contrasts amongst cyanoacrylate esters about their synthesis, chemical characterisation, hydrolytic degradation, and thermal and mechanical properties. Cyanoacrylate polymers of short and long alkyls or oxy-alkyls, cyclic, and aromatic esters have been synthesised and evaluated. All monomers form polymers when exposed to triethylamine vapours possessing molecular weights in the spectrum of 15, our telephone ,000Da, where the alkyl esters form high MW polymers. A wide spectrum of hydrolytic degradation rates has been found, as monitored by the release of formaldehyde above time. Alkoxy CAs display faster hydrolytic degradation compared to alkyl CAs. Regarding mechanical properties, CAs are classified into primarily viscous (G'>G?) and primarily elastic (G?>G'). Alkoxy CA polymers have a higher loss modulus (G') than storage modulus (G?). Octyl CA polymer possess a G'G? (phase angle ~45) providing appropriate balance between mechanical strength and plasticity. Most alkyl CAs are compact and brittle. Alkoxy CAs display enhanced plasticity, nevertheless they lack mechanical strength. In normal, the Tg for alkoxy CAs is less than alkyl CAs. Alkoxy CAs depolymerise fast at temperatures >200C. Overall, ester sidechains of CA esters strongly affect the polymer property.

“No longer will aircraft carriers and their associated air wings be able to operate with impunity. Instead, they will face a dense and growing threat across their full spectrum of operations.”

Push for complimentary carrier bags after plastic ban

Retailers said the bags, unlike plastics are expensive. The cost of carrier bags would affect the P&L (profits and loss record), says Uchumi Supermarket acting CEO MohamedAhmed.

After waiting a superb 10 minutes, we saw at least 15 young and middle old men, walking around the lobby drinking, with transparent carrier bags with clothes in. The first couple went unnoticed, nevertheless we saw more young men in the bar, corridours and outside sat on the wall.

Hasegawa has issued several F-15 kits above the years. The first one was a prototype aircraft with the squared wing tips. It was quite basic with raised panel lines and minimal detail. However, that was expected from a kit in the early 1970s. This kit was later modified with the cut back wing tips, larger speed brake and proper fins with the proper sized anti-flutter weights on the tips. In 1988 a new kit was issued. The first boxing was this one for the home market. It was also released in a USAF version a short time later, and has been reissued a number of times since then. A two seater has also been done with a change in the sprue that has the B/D bits in it. The kit has the expected nicely engraved panel lines, a well done cockpit with engraved instrument panel and console detail, nice detail in the wheel wells, etc, etc. It is also built to the modular view that enables several alternative versions to be done with one kit. Fortunately for us, the Eagle has not been heavily modified until one acquires to the E model, so all the fiddly stuff is kept to a minimum. This kit offers  exhaust that are sans the 'United Kingdom feather' coverings. These were removed from USAF Eagles after it was discovered that they were of small use and caused maintenance problems. This means that you can build this kit as a USAF bird with almost no mods. Actually, a big percentage of the parts count is the afterburner nozzle assembly.  It is equally nice that the USAF fin with the DECM receiver in it is also included in the kit Options are somewhat minimal. One is that you can put decals in position of the instruments should you select. You also have the option of installing three fuel tanks; one on the centerline and the other two hanging from the wing pylons. No included are any offensive missiles. This is to acquire you to fork out additional funds on the weapons set. You can also display the speed brake in the open position, nevertheless this was almost not ever seen open while on the ramp. Finally, the separate canopy and windscreen means that you can pose the canopy open and a canopy brace is provided for that purpose. Instructions are the normal superb Hasegawa offerings with all your colours in Gunze paints and with FS numbers provided where applicable. The rather big decal sheet is festooned with data stencils and offers markings for Eagles with all of the JASDF squadrons flying the plane in 1988. All are painted identically in FS 36320 and 36475, which I believe are light and dark ghost grey, or something like that. It is the rather bland nature of Eagle markings that one does not see also plenty of them built.  Fortunately, there are a few semi-fascinating aftermarket sheets that offer a few slightly more fascinating markings. CONSTRUCTION One thing about this kit is that there are a LOT of subassemblies. As I like to attached as plenty as I can at one time, I got to work proper away. First thing I had to do was repair a broken intake fork on the upper fuselage half. Then I started gluing together bits. This encompassed a drop tank, the wings, the intakes, the cockpit itself along with the nose gear door, the intake ramps and intake walls on the upper and lower fuselage halves respectively, and the seat. Thankfully there are two seats in this set as I broke the side part on one of them so had to use the second one. I then did the normal filler thing to the intakes and then did a batch of painting, mostly of bits that were going to be assembled and difficult to paint once the assemblies were together. Then I glued in the lower intake bits and the compressour faces to the lower fuselage and the intake ramps to the upper part. The two intakes were then simply slid into place. I did not want to come by out when the fuselage halves were mated that I had glued them also far forward or also far back. In the cockpit I attached the decals for the instrument panel and console and after painting the aft part with a blue green from Pollyscale, a few weight was attached to the inner nose part and the cockpit trapped between the nose halves. The area behind the cockpit acquires attached next. This needed super glue as the part itself is a bit wider than the forward nose so each side was glued separately while I held it spread so it would be relatively flush. I then glued together the upper and lower fuselage. Fit is about as expected, which is not big. I glued the intakes on the bottom and outer sides first to be sure I got a superb fit in the areas where they would be most visible. The next step was to glue in the completed nose part. I should mention that I added a touch of weight, only in case. This was the worst fitting part of the build, nevertheless after several sessions with filler and files and sand paper, it looked pretty superb. The wings were not an issue and after attaching the upper and lower sections, and filling the seams, mostly on the outside part, they were glued on. I also cemented the speed brake in the closed position. By this time, I had decided to a USAF F-15C rather than the F-15J, so chose the fins appropriate for this version. The F-15C also has a small antenna on the back of one of the extensions aft of the fin. However, I seem to have lost it or more likely, tossed it out. A part of sprue was shaped and glued in position for a replacement. I fit the inner part into the main canopy part and then masked it and the windscreen. These were then attached, the windscreen permanently and the canopy tacked in position. COLORS & MARKINGS There are few camo options for the Eagle and since I wanted to do a Desert Storm aircraft, I used the scheme most planes wore up to that time, which was FS 36375 and FS 36320. First the wheel wells, wheels, struts, and inside of gear doors were painted white utilising the superb Tru-Colour paints. Then those were masked with tissue and the all airframe painted the lighter FS 36375. I then masked this in the back and painted the bare metal areas with Tru-Colour's Aluminum. The back part around where the burner nozzles would proceed was then misted with Alcla d II Dark Aluminum. The darker FS 36320 was then thinned and the pattern hand sprayed utilising an Iwata Revolution on low pressure.  This was all later gloss coated utilising Pledge (Future). Meanwhile, I assembled a drop tank and the missile pylons and rails. These were painted with the 36375. I also painted a few AIM-9L missiles from the Hasegawa Weapons Set with the Tru-Colour white. The set does not have the 9Ms used in Desert Storm, nevertheless the Ls are pretty close. I did not paint Sparrows as I used the ones from the set on the Spectre done earlier. The next step was to attach the gear struts. These were all a bit fussy to install and one has to take big care to retain things aligned. I particularly found the two auxiliary struts on the main gear to be difficult to attach and the main gear themselves were a very loose fit. Eventually they were in position and solid enough to enable the kit to stand on the struts. With a glossy Eagle, it was time for markings. For this, I used Wolfpak sheet 72-019: Hunter, Hornets and Strikes, which included markings for a F-15C from the 71 TFS/1TFW operating amid Desert Storm. It has a kill marking scored by Steve Tate against a British Mirage F.1 in the early hours of that conflict. The Wolfpak decals went on with small trauma, though I did have a few silvering issues, even when utilising setting solutions. These specific decals are printed by Fantasy Printshop and have big transparent carriers around each marking that I did not trim, and that was where I had a few silvering. I used to trim decals throughout, nevertheless above the years, got spoiled. The rest of the markings came from the kit sheet. I was rather minimalist on the data markings because the ones in the Hasegawa sheet are in British, one of the issues when utilising a J to build a C. I then semi-matte coated the airframe and transport along in the rest of the building. FINAL CONSTRUCTION I then started on the burner cans. Without reading the instructions, I glued the burner petals to each of the exhaust assemblies. I found the fit to be rather poor. I also found out why when I started attaching the small actuating rods, finding them to be also long. These actuating rods had to be attached BEFORE the pe tal assemblies were to be fit to the exhaust assemblies. This would have vastly improved the fit, nevertheless I had screwed up. My options were to continue and make the optimal of it or plunk down leading quids for resin replacements. I did the former. This assembly was painted Jet Exhaust from the Alclad II line. The forward gear doors for the main and nose gear were cemented shut and the wheels were then attached. These are very loose fits so be prepared to use super glue to attach them. The Sparrow clamps were then glued on as were the smaller gear doors. I then glued in the canopy extension strut in the cockpit, removed the masking from the transparent bits and glued the canopy in position after installing the bang seat. Last bits to attach were the pitot tubes close the nose and the wing pylons with missiles. The normal touch up painting was done and the small antennas on the wings and fin as well as the formation lights were painted utilising a Sharpie. Oh yes, there are landing lights on the nose gear to attach. These are nearly impossible to properly clean up once they are removed from the sprue and getting them glued in position was also quite a feat. CONCLUSIONS I realise that the F-15 is not exactly a WOW model for plenty, nevertheless it is a necessary aircraft for the USAF inventory, particularly since the F-22 has had so much trouble in service. It has been decades since I last built a F-15 and that was the Airfix F-15B, which is still a nice kit, nevertheless is a 70s kit with all that implies. Overall it was pretty much what I expected from a 90's Hasegawa kit. Despite my screw-ups, it turned out well and is a fine replacement in my assortment for the old Airfix kit. July 2012

Retail bags and polythene

The vast majority of retail bags are made from polyethylene, more widely known as polythene, in a range of thicknesses to suit the task in hand. The thickness of the polythene - also known as the gauge or density - varies from very thin, as with thin counter bags - at just 9 microns thick - to thick, as with premium quality carrier bags such as clip-close carrier bags - at 75 microns (300 gauge) thick.

Not all retail bags are made from polyethylene, or polythene, however. Some retail bags, like takeaway bags for example, are made from paper, while others, like gift bags, are made from cardboard.

But as this website is all about retail bags and the most common form as retail bags are polythene bags, this website will be focussing on polythene bags in these pages.

Carrier bags - the number one retail bag

By far and away the most popular form of retail bag, carrier bags are employed by retailers in every corner of the globe, making them the big daddy of the retail trade as far as polythene bags are concerned.

Carrier bags are designed to allow the customer to carry purchased products from the shop to their homes or businesses in an ergonomic manner. The bags come with different types of handle styles to allow the customer to carry the bag. Many types of handle give the bag its name, with some of the popular styles including: vest carriers, patch handle carriers and patch handle carriers.

Other popular types of carrier bag, not named after their handle, include varigauge carriers - so named because the thickness, or gauge, of the polythene is twice as thick at the top of the bag as at the top - and premium carriers, popular in the top-end fashion outlets or department stores.

Whatever type of business you own, there is a carrier bag out there for you. Whether you need cheap and cheerful or reassuringly expensive, you can always find the carrier bag to get the job done, but you can also use them to send a message to your customers about your business too.

Other popular types of retail bag

Whilst carrier bags are comfortably the most commonly used bag by the retail sector, there are many other forms of bag that perform an important role for retail businesses everywhere. These include:

Produce bags - Used by food retailers from mega-size supermarkets to small local butchers, thin light produce bags are an essential item for any food retailer. Available either on the roll or served loose from a packet, food bags can be used both from behind the counter - e.g. a butcher bagging up a pound of mince - or at front of house, as with the tear-off bags used in supermarkets to collect loose fruit.

Display bags - Employed by retailers who want to display their products in the best possible light, crystal clear display bags make products sparkle. Manufactured from high clarity polypropylene - similar to cellophane but clearer, thicker, stronger and cheaper - these bags are used for presenting a range of products, including greetings cards, magazines and sweets. Also available in sleeve form, as used with flowers and CDs to make them shine.

Mailing or postage bags - These polythene mailers, complete with integral sealing strip, are the perfect way to deliver products to your customers. Lightweight and waterproof, poly mailers are a great alternative to traditional envelopes. They are available in a range of styles and in plain or coloured polythene. You can also get your mailing bags printed with your very own company logo, branding or slogan, so that they really stand out from the crowd and make your business the most memorable one in any batch of mail.

Gift bags - The most popular retail bag that isn’t made of polythene, gift bags are a great way to present a gift to friends, loved ones or colleagues without having to even wrap it! No need to wrapping paper, scissors, cellotape or minutes of your life wasted trying to make a gift look nice. Just place your present in you shiny gift bag - complete with a smart cord handle and your gift will look just fantastic. Available in standard shape for regular everyday presents like books, CDs or jewellery, or in bottle gift bags - the perfect way to present any bottled gift from champagne to a fine Scotch whiskey.

Polypeptide and protein immunomodulatours are subject to absorption, biodistribution, metabolism and degradation at sites and rates which may not enable effective interactions with components of the immune system. Drug carrier technology can overcome a few of these obstacles. Because of the lipid and particulate nature of liposomes, increased delivery of immunomodulatours to lymphatics, lymph nodes, lymphatic organs and concentrations of macrophages is potential when an immunomodulatour is associated with a liposome. Interleukin-2 (IL-2) liposomes have been shown to have less toxicity and increased immunotherapeutic effects in a number of model systems and are currently in human clinical trials. Local routes like aerosol delivery to the lung are particularly well suited to use with liposomes containing immunomodulatours. Polypeptides can also improve the interaction of an immunomodulatour with the immune system via increased immunostimulation; this can provide a means to improve oral delivery and to achieve depot effects. Polysaccharide microspheres havebeen shown to be effective biodegradable carriers of immunomodulatours. Finally, genetically engineered bacteria, viruses and mammalian cells may function as delivery systems for immunomodulatory peptides and proteins. Attenuated Salmonella strains can transport immunomodulatours to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, liver and spleen. In mouse experiments utilising tumour cells manufacturing granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factour (GM-CSF), irradiated tumour preparations manufactured GM-CSF and were capable of eliciting effective cell-mediated immune responses, including destruction and elimination of tumour as well as resistance to tumour challenge (Polybags). A wide assortment of immunomodulatours have been tested utilising this strategy; IL-2 and GMCSF are among the most potent inducers of both cell-mediated effectour and memory responses. In summary, use of delivery-systems can significantly improve the immunomodulatory potential of polypeptides and proteins.

Biodegradable retail bags

A number retail bags manufactured from traditional polythene - as listed elsewhere on this page - are also available made from biodegradable materials so that, when they need to be disposed of, they don’t contribute to landfill. The biodegradable material from which these bags are made will degrade 100% on prolonged contact with compost or soil, meaning that you make less of an impact on the environment.

What’s more, courtesy of a small green logo placed on all of the bags, your customers will know that you care about the environment too.

The following retail bags are available in biodegradable alternatives: biodegradable carrier bags, biodegradable mailing bags, biodegradable clear bags (for presenting your products) and eco-friendly bin liners (for keeping your shop clean).
